SLICKDEALS’ DEALS DETAIL SIDE BAR

Redesign of Slickdeal’s extension deals details side bar

Role: Product Designer, UX Researcher

Overview

Shopping has never been as easy as it is now with current advancement in infrastructure and technological advancements. With increase in consumerism culture and demand, customers are always looking for competitive prices on their everyday purchases. At the cornerstone of online shopping and consumer desires is Slickdeals, a community driven company since 1999 that has continually promoted and helped users and buyers to share deal information in order to inform them of best current shopping decision. Recognized by the shopping community over a decade, Slickdeals eventually launched their extension. The extension mimics the capabilities of their website but would readily assist its users as they navigate through their easiest and most difficult of online shopping journeys, ensuring they are satisfied with any purchases executed.

Problem Statement

Noticing a decrease in user retention rate among veteran and new Slickdeals users within the extension we look to evaluate DDSB on its ability to deliver information to users effectively and accessbily.

Business Goal

The refinement of DDSB will help inform users on the intended product, leading to higher checkout conversion rate, comission, and decreaase in uninstalls from veteran core users while retaining new extension users.

Design Process

RESEARCH

Initial Research

Before investing resources into researching more on extension’s deal detail side bar (DDSB), we went back to look at previous research that was done around and adjacent to the deals detail page within the website and the extension. With previous findings, data, and takeaways from various tests, together laid better groundwork to determine the method of research and goals of our research.

Data and tests that was previously uncovered included:

  • Extension uninstallation survey

  • Deals detail page usability test results

  • Data of feature usage within extension’s DDSB

Unmoderated User Testing

The data uncovered from previous research and tests help became a cornerstone to research goals and questions going forward. To quickly understand how users perceive and accomplish tasks using the extension’s DDSB we create a unmoderated user test.

The test targeted participants that have used Slickdeals products from both the website and extension for a minimum of three months. A typical shopping scenario-based test with tasks were given to participants to accomplish while thinking aloud during the process. The results collected from watching users navigate and describe their experiences will help us gain better insights on the extension’s DDSB shortcomings and pain-points.

DEFINE

User Feedback and Data

The test data received from users were then gathered to produce an affinity map. The results from the data showed a pattern of painpoints, helpful insights, and experiences that users provided during the test.

From those patterns the key takeaways were:

IDEATE

Low Fidelity Wireframes

With various areas of painpoints identified with the help of users, we began to generate solutions which are then implemented through early sketches. These various ideas of solutions are then transferred onto low fidelity versions of wireframes.

High Fidelity Wireframes

As various ideas are shared among the team, feedback and user data references drove our decision in choosing a design solution that would provide a better experience for users navigating the DDSB.

Designing Solutions

With a chosen design, we look to incorporate solutions in the form of a high fidelity solution that reflects the key points within the user testing data.

NEXT STEPS

Sharing and Feedback

  • We look to share the designed solution with the stakeholders to obtain additional feedback. This design represents one of many solutions that can be iterated to improve the experiences of users on the extension. Continous feedback can help expedite the range of solutions generated towards future designs.

Testing

  • Although a new design may take longer to implement, areas of the new design can be tested through A/B testing to gain further data from users shopping within the extension using DDSB.
